LAVA Agni 5G review

Design

To began with design, Lava Agni 5G comes with glossy blue and silver colour what they called Fiery Blue colour, that shines when light reflects off it from different angles. This has also a bit of matte finish on plastic body.

Apart from design, this phone feels strudy and solid even with its plastic body. On other hand, the 6.78 inch display is protected by gorilla glass 3 but there is no extra tempered glass protection from outside.

However, this phone is little bit bulky and difficult to hold for long time as it has 204g weight and big size. But, I am comfortable with that and this may be subject of users.

Performance of Lava Agni 5G

Coming to performance, Lava Agni 5G is powered by Mediatek Dimensity 810 Processor, a 8 core CPU with 2 cortex A76 cores clocked at 2.4 GHz and 6 cortex A55 clocked at 2GHz. Performance wish, this processor is equivalent to Snapdragon 732G and it is very capable processor for budget smartphone.

Gaming on Agni 5G

As far as gaming is concerned, we have intensively tested this phone for more than one weeks. This phone can easily handle BGMI but, sometimes I do have noticed some frame drops in highest settings even though processor is capable to do that smoothly. This may be an issue with optimization, this need to be fixed.

Furthermore, there is some bugs on the phone, sometimes UI feels minute inconsistent, I also encountered ghost touches occasionally. Although it has 8GB of RAM for better performance, but company wouldn't mentioned RAM type.

Back to other performance, this phone can smoothly handle normal apps that you use everyday, there is no major issue with regular use.

Display and Sound

Heading towards display, Lava Again 5G has 6.78 inch 90Hz LCD display, I think it has one of the largest display under 20 thousand rupees smartphone. The display quality is great as compared to other IPS LCD display at this price. I found the bezels around the display are barely thin, with only the chin being comparatively thicker.

However, phone is set to 60Hz by default, you need to set high refresh rate from settings. There is also an option for toggle refresh rate, which should have been in the Display or quick menu section for ease of use.

Apart from that, display viewing angle is great and outdoor visibility is also good. Initially there was no Widevine L1 support, but now that has been fixed by an update. It means now you can watch OTT platform like Netflix and Amazon prime at Full HD.

On speaker side, this phone is equipped with the single bottom firing speaker. It is loud enough to enjoy listening music or watching videos.

Overall, display is satisfactory, I have enjoyed a lot content on this phone and 90Hz display even make feels great.

Camera

Moving on camera, unlike other budget smartphone, Lava Agni 5G has gone with a quad camera setup including 5MP ultra wide camera along with 64MP omnivision sensor of F1.79 aperture and 2MP-2MP macro and depth sensor. Very frankly, I don't know who like to use these 2MP camera.

Anyway, I am not a fond of Lava Agni 5G camera. Camera interface is oldies like micromax. Also, there is not much option available with this pre-installed camera app and photo's colours are slightly inconsistent. Furthermore, Dinamic range is not good and HDR functionality don't works properly. One thing do note that camera is by default set to 64MP resolution, you need to change that to 16MP, otherwise it will take lot more space. It takes few 2 to 3 seconds for processing, while taking photos in potrait mode. Lava fails to handle lighting conditions in low light and night photography. It takes low light images in long exposure but quality is degraded by grains. One thing I do noticed that Lava Agni 5G has upto 2K video recording although hardware is totally capable. Likewise I said before, company need to seriously work on camera to capture this competitive market at budget segment.

Now moving to 16MP selfie camera, photo quality is decent and there is no such problem exists. Overall photo quality is decent at day light and its negative side will not effect you if you are not a camera lover.

Battery backup & Charging

Lava Agni 5G is fueled by 5000 mah Li-Ion battery which can easily run a day without changing in normal use. That’s good by all means, given that 2 hours of gaming, 1 hours of watching youtube and my casual use. I have no complain with battery backup. Lava has done a good job on battery.

Beside battery, Agni 5G supports 30W of PD charging with USB type-C cable which took around 90 minutes to completely change this phone.

Operating System and UI experiences

Lava Agni 5G run on Android 11 OS although it is not actually stock android. Lava tried to add some animations and a different look and feel. Overall, I like their approach because I like custom skin over stock android.

By the way, Agni 5G do have some bugs and problems with UI like quick menu/drop down menu don't work properly while using youtube on landscape mode, occasionally it get freezes and some minute bugs. These are even more noticeable while using in landscape mode. These could be expected to be fixed in future as company promised to provide two years software updates.

Connectivity

About connectivity, as you know Lava has gone with 5G, having support of 3 bands and there is 4G VoLTE support alongwith carrier aggregation and 3G, 2G supports as well. Apart from that,  there is no much things to tell about, as Lava wouldn't mentioned about WiFi and bluetooth version.

Pros

• Lava Agni 5G has impressive quality display which is feels good while watching videos.

• There is no compromises with performance as it is powered by Dimensity 810.

• Overall Battery backup is good enough.

Cons

• Camera performance is inconsistent and disappointing.

• There is some bugs in software which needed to be fixed in future and this phone needs more optimization.

Conclusion

Lava has gone with a decent phone, with Dimensity 810 processor which is decent to play pubg like heavy games. Its display quality is truly amazing. One thing that I have not found polished experience with UI and camera. As a first attempt, this could happen but Lava should focus on software, specially on camera segment to keep existence on market as it is getting strong competition from its contenders.

Should you buy Lava Agni 5G ?

Throughout my test, analysing all the aspects Lava Agni 5G is a decent smartphone in 20 thousand. If you can bear with this level of camera performance, you can go for it. Otherwise, if you are a camera lover, photography is much matters for you or even you need perfect polish UI, I would say better to search for other options. Now, if you get it on 3 - 4 thousand discount, I can easily recommend this phone. Just go for it and grab that offer.
