As changing completed, software reduce charging input into minimal amount or completely stop charging. In both cases, there is no harm. But it is better to maintain your smartphone battery into 25% to 80% in order to get longer battery life.
If you are using very old phone or feature phone, then better is not to change overnight. Because they may not have such technologies.
