HP Pavilion x360 laptop review

Design and Build Quality

Starting with design, HP Pavilion x360 come up with minimal and sleek design with natural silver colour and high grade antistatic plastic build body. On the top of this laptop, there is a shiny reflective HP logo which looks quite attractive. Furthermore, there is a heat exost vent and bunch of ports on either side of this laptop and all of these are in 19mm thickness.

At the bottom side, there is a large and wide air intake and rubber grip at each corner to ensure that the laptop can stay in place and to make sure that the air can pass through intake vent.

After opening this this laptop, one thing I noticed that, this laptop has barely narrow bazels and a standard webcam at top center. Also there is two metallic hinges which are solid, strong and looks premium.

Additionally, this laptop is 360° foldable, it means you can use it as regular laptop or as a tablet. Furthermore, just like smartphone you can easily switch between potrait mode and landscape mode as it has couple of additional sensors including gyroscope, accelerometer and compass sensor.

Performance of HP Pavilion x360

Coming on performance, this laptop has different performance in its 3 varient with Intel i3, i5 and i7 11th generation processor but I have used i5 varient so, this article is more of i5 centric review.

Now, HP has done a whole lot in its 2021 edition Pavilion x360 laptop. This laptop has 11th gen Intel core i5-1135G7 processor of clock speed upto 4.2 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology. It means for basic day to day use, this laptop will work like a charm. There is also 16 GB DDR4-3200 MHz RAM in 2 slots each of 8GB.

As far as storage is concerned, this laptop comes with 512GB NVMe SSD. Unfortunately, there is no extra slot to expand storage but I think this much storage is enough for normal use.

Software experience and editing

I am using this laptop from couple of days as my primary laptop and there is no issue while doing normal stuff like working on excel, PowerPoint, word document or even watching movies. I have also tried to run android studio (Programming software), MySQL and also played some of games on it. And ofcourse, I will come to that point later.

Beside the usual performance, this laptop is also good at normal editing with its integrated Iris Xe GPU. I have tested video editing on DaVinci Resolve and there was no problem while editing at 1080p but as I switched to 4K, it began to inconsistent and fair bit of lag has been found. One thing you have to note that this laptop has only 45% NTSC so, this laptop is not a good option for colour grading or working with colour.

Heating and Gaming on HP Pavilion x360

Moving on gaming performance, HP Pavilion x360 is equipped with Intel Iris Xe GPU although this laptop is not designed for gamers and not for intensive gaming.

Meanwhile, I have played couple of games for few hours, including GTA-V, Valorant and CS-GO. This laptop can managed to get 60 fps while playing GTA-V at lowest settings even sometime dropped to 48fps and there was no major difference in other games as well. Overall, you can play modern games at lower settings.

Apart from this, Pavilion x360 has a heat exost vent on left side and a wide area air intake at bottom to keep itself cool. Throughout my use, I have found that this laptop doesn't heated much but if you run heavy software for few hours, then it will warm up. I am pretty impressed with heat management on hp pavilion x360 and fan is also quite silent and usually it don't make noise at maximum speed.

Display & Sound

In terms of display, HP Pavilion x360 comes with 14 inch FHD+ touch screen display of 45% NTSC and 250 nits maximum brightness, it means if you use it at outdoor, it will be not clearly visible. On addition, this laptop has glossy display which will directly reflect light. Furthermore, if you are a professional video editor or if you did work with colour grading this laptop is not for you as it has only 55% sRGB colour accuracy.

However, display panel is pretty good, viewing angle is good and I have watched a lot of shows in laptop mode as well as in tablet mode and it was really a different experience. One more thing is it there is small rubber grip on either side of keyboard to keep it safe from scratches while using in tablet mode on the table. Furthermore, it can easily interchange between potrait mode to landscape mode using gyroscope, accelerometer and other sensor. Its touch response is also fast and there is no latency.

Right above the keyboard itself, there is a long and large speaker grill, these are 2W dual stereo speaker from B&O. Seriously I don't know why hp is highlighting speaker's branding even though, sound quality is not that much great. But, overall sound is decent loud and ok I have no problem with it.

Keyboard and Trackpad

Getting to the keyboard, HP Pavilion x360 has an entire backlit keyboard with 2 tire lighting system for different lighting conditions. There is no num pad as it is only 14 inch laptop. There is a slight bit of wobble on each individual key but for some people it is hard to notice. Overall typing experience was good and I have no problem with it.

Furthermore, keyboard stops working during 360° folded mode or tablet mode but there is a virtual keyboard like on mobile to type while using on tablet mode.

Unfortunately, trackpad in this laptop is not good. It feels cheap as it has very much wobble and I personally don't like its trackpad even through, it support multi touch gesture.

For security, hp has provided a fingerprint reader just below the keyboard which is quite fast and responsive. I am pretty impressed with its performance.

Ports

Pavillion x360 has diversified ports including one USB type-C which can be used for charging although there is a dedicated HP charging port. One HDMI 2.0 port and two USB type A port are there, on addition, there is a SD card reader and a 3.5mm audio jack at left side. I must say I would've liked it more if it had a thunderbolt port.

Battery backup & Charging

HP is offering 43 Watt-hours 3-cell Li-Ion battery on this laptop. As expected, this laptop has 6 to 7 hours run time although company is claiming 10 hours of battery backup. Meanwhile, battery backup is subject to software use and there is no fixed number for that.

On other side, there is a 65W traditional laptop charging adaptor which can charge 50% in 30 minutes. But that adaptor support only hp charging port. By the way, I am not a fond of this port. But good things is this laptop does support USB type-C charging as well.

Connectivity

On the connectivity front, Pavilion x360 comes with latest WiFi 6 and Bluetooth v5.0 and this are pretty good as a budget 2 in 1 laptop, I have no complain about its connectivity.

OS and other software

Finally moving to operating system, HP Pavilion x360 is run on windows 10 Home but, I don't know whether they will provide windows 11 update or not. On addition, this laptop has licensed version pre-installed Microsoft office 2019 Home & Student edition for lifetime.

HP Pavilion x360 Pros

• Fashionable design

• 2 in 1 convertible

• Touch screen support

• Built-in fingerprint reader

• Additional gyroscope, accelerometer and compass sensor support.

HP Pavilion x360 Cons

• Trackpad is pretty wobbly and feels cheap quality.

• Display quality could be better.

Conclusion of Pavilion x360 review

Summing up this review, HP Pavilion x360 is decent laptop at its price. This compact premium design laptop is basically popular for its unique touch screen and 2 in 1 convertible feature. Plus, latest i5 and i7 processor are like cherry on the top. The only mild issue is in its trackpad.

However, all the way I can say this laptop could be a perfect option for students, professionals and designers those are looking for budget 2 in 1 laptop.
